Looks like Detroit will be run by a new outside manager. I hope he does a better job than the current Mayor and city council.

Just stupidity all around.

I work for the state so I get emails from the Gov's office. They sent us numerous emails about unruly crowds and extra security at the capital. I can see the capital from my office. There was a very small, relatively quiet crowd. It's all sensationalism.

Just stupidity.

Doesn't seem much like a disqualification:

Detroit has dropped down to a population of 700,000. I think it was a million or so in 2000. The auto companies are coming back and GM has introduced some pretty good cars. The new Stringray is one I love as well as the Volt. So why is the economy so bad in Detroit?

I have no idea how this will play out, either. Time will tell.

Things fall apart and sometimes they have to before you can rebuild. You can't keep patching a leaky roof. Eventually, the whole roof

must be replaced and made structurally sound. I think this is the case with Detroit. There are so many decades ofvurban blight and bad economy, corrupt leaders and violence, something has got to change.

Just yanking your chain, romani.

Haven't focused on a map of Michigan since... 'never', works... and was just looking for an opinion from someone with a more immediate grasp of Detroit and the surrounding 'burbs.

Opinions are cheap... I've expressed tons, including: Rick Perry a shoe-in for the republican nomination, that Romney would beat Obama hands down, that.... well, other embarrasingly wrong things.

If you're wrong, you're wrong, but life goes on.

What are you talking about? I didn't reply because I just don't have an answer. I know nothing about Atlanta and I don't know what will happen when Detroit collapses.

Either mentioning Atlanta in the same sentence as Detroit somehow violated the 'no mention of party affliation' clause or the collapse is so complete it's sucked the OP's reply in along with it.no

Not familiar with what Detroit might have going for it besides what it lost but.... if there's nothing other than people trying to get by, without a base, it'll shrink to fit.

There was a piece over the weekend about the problems DeKalb county (Atlanta proper) is having as far as corruption, school performance, flight to the suburbs (which are incorporating), and while it shares some of the problems of detroit, it looks like only the city proper is in danger of going down the tubes.

Honestly don't know: will Detroit leave a prosperous ring around it when it goes, or is the collapse sucking everything in along with it?

Detroit's a hell hole. It's sad but true. There are no jobs, even for those who want them and no money for those stuck to relocate. I'm an advocate of knocking down the abandoned buildings and turning it to farm land or something. There are whole blocks with only one person on them.

Despite what people think, those in Detroit want to save it. They don't have the resources and their votes mean nothing as everything's rigged. Those who have resources have already left.

I actually had a lot of hope that when Snyder came in, he would clean up shop quickly in Detroit. I was wrong.

I'll check that out, sls.

I am looking forward to reading Charle Le Duff's book about Detroit.

What has happened there for decades should be a wake-up call to other big cities.

I can't link article right now - but if interested go to the Breitbart site to check out book review. I saw Le Duff on an interview last week. He was a NY Times journalist who went home to Detroit to write for small town paper. Interesting guy.

Unfortunately though, no justice for Tamara Greene's family- the woman who was beaten by Mrs. Kilpatrick and likely killed by one of his or her hitmen. The murder was then covered up by just about everyone. Sick.

http://www.cnn.com/2013/03/11/justice/michigan-kilpatrick-verdict/index.html?hpt=hp_bn1

"A jury on Monday convicted former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick of most of the federal charges against him -- including racketeering conspiracy, extortion and the filing of false tax returns -- in a case that accused him of using the mayor's office to enrich himself and associates, CNN affiliate WDIV-TV reported."

Bout time. Hope the bastard rots in jail for the rest of his miserable life.

And please, no comments about his party affiliation. Bad people are bad people regardless of the letter next to their name. There are bad apples in both parties.

And no, the city of Detroit did NOT elect him a 2nd time. Even Detroit's not that stupid. The election was stolen and fixed and everyone knows it.
