I agree with you bus, I think this is a political ploy, it might even be for the SoS position, not the SoD. That being said I can't think of anyone he will pluck for SoD especially since Petraeus is off the table.

If he appoints Kerry, he doesn't have to worry about downsizing the military personnel roles, they will voluntarily leave in droves as soon as their commitment is over. He might as well nominate Jane Fonda for SoD.

You can bet your bottom dollar if he noms Kerry McCain will fight him, and every military member will be with McCain. Kerry does not deserve the right to be even considered for this position IMPO.

You know, pima, you and me are more qualified to serve as SOD than Kerry. And at least we don't loathe it.

I'll give Obama the benefit of the doubt, that he has the brains to not actually do this, and it is purely a political ploy to pretend you're considering something that you really aren't (for whatever possible reason, I don't know). He'd have to be a complete tone deaf idiot, or have an absolute scorn for the military to nominate him. Kerry hasn't been involved, nor showed interest in the position (at least according to the article I read, no idea how true it is). There are plenty of good people still out there, not like there aren't any other choices.

Nobody would honestly be this dumb, so I'll stick with my hope that it's purely polictical posturing, for who knows why.

Actually, pima, I never believe the stories about pilot shortages. Right now, many airlines are still overstaffed, because of all the cutbacks over the years, many still have pilots on furlough. Add that to the fact that the retirement age was raised to 65, and these guys never retire....in fact, they work extra, we all work extra because we're worried about the economy (and many of the old guys have their 3 ex-wives to pay for). I just don't think there will be a shortage. Except for the airlines that nobody wants to fly for, like the commuters that pay nothing. I still don't think airline flying is a job I'd encourage my kids to get into unless they loved flying, because right now there are only 2 I'd want to fly for, and one of them you'd have to wear brown polyester (and who looks good in that)?

I'm sure many, many people would start walking right now, especially with Kerry in charge, if they thought for sure they'd get jobs. But the problem is, even if the airlines start hiring, so many people have lost their retirement and pay is way down, so there aren't a lot of good jobs. Luckily those contractor jobs sound like a great deal, but who knows what will happen if they start slashing defense.

"While on my rant...I can't tell you how many military members feel disgust at the thought John Kerry will be the next SOD."

Oh my God. I thought that I'd misread that somewhere, or that it was a bad dream. I just told my first officer that I thought I'd heard that, to which he started laughing, and said, "No way, you must have gotten that wrong." And I said, "Yeah, I don't know where I got that."

And it's true? Not just something I imagined?

That would be the ultimate insult, showing the greatest possible disrespect for the military, having as SOD someone who had shown such contempt and had lied about the military. Though he is such a war hero, having shot himself in the ass and written himself up for all those medals. Gee, why not Jane Fonda, instead? At least she's sorry.

If he was nominated, that would be quite telling. At least Panetta seemed to have a sincere interest, respect, and caring for the military.

longprime,

No offense, but to answer your question what's the problem with Rice?

One word: BENGHAZI!

She sat there and said as a UN Ambassador, it was not pre-planned, and a youtube issue days, weeks later.

We all now know that was nothing near the truth.

While on my rant...I can't tell you how many military members feel disgust at the thought John Kerry will be the next SOD. A guy who threw his medals away.

Most of you know I was sitting Shiva for Bullet's Mom this past week since Tuesday. She lived in an adult community. Her son, grandson and nephews have served/are serving and their parents are spitting nails over Obama's choices. Their neighbors and friends served in Vietnam and have children/grandchildren serving. They are in NJ a D stronghold.

Obama IMPO is proving what the R's feared, he will ram through what he wants. He said it in his acceptance speech, He believes that because he won with 50.6% of the vote he is validated in his doctrine. He doesn't want to play with the Rs.

Honestly, Rice and Kerry?

He doesn't need to worry about the military budget...they are going to leave in droves under Kerry.

Add that into the fact that airlines have a federal mandate regarding pilots stepping out of the ****pit at the age of 62, every branch will lose pilots. Understand after 9/11 airlines stopped hiring. Most pilots come on at 42-43, their young pilots are now 50 something. Ask busdriver she will tell you, there is going to be a HUGE HUGE shortage in 3-5 yrs. Kerry as SOD they will walk! No self respecting military member will support a guy like Kerry. They would rather eat their skin than salute him.

Our DS is at AF UPT training, they are hoping against all hope that he will not be confirmed.

The same with Rice for me as a voter. Seriously, the woman lied to this nation in front of the UN. As a parent, I bet you didn't reward your child for a lie, Obama def. does!

Bus,

You didn't dream it, that is Obama's 1st pick.

Seriously what is Obama thinking?

Maybe it is Obama's way to get the DOD numbers in alignment...personnel would hand in their papers...he would hollow out the military like Jimmy Carter.

Yes, Bus, it is true.  Bullet is spitting nails.  http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/obama-considers-john-kerry-for-job-of-defense-secretary/2012/11/12/8a0e973a-2d02-11e2-a99d-5c4203af7b7a_story.html
President Obama is considering asking Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) to serve as his next defense secretary, part of an extensive rearrangement of his national security team that will include a permanent replacement for former CIA director David H. Petraeus.

Although Kerry is thought to covet the job of secretary of state, senior administration officials familiar with the transition planning said that nomination will almost certainly go to Susan E. Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

This is WaPO. not the Examiner.

Bus,

1. Several of our good friends were furloughed. You know what they did? They went back into the AF as AD members, they can't bolt.

2. The economy issue 1000% agreement regarding retirement, but the fact is:
~~~ Airlines have not hired at a high rate since 2000...avg age 42, they are looking at 54. Airlines are saying in the next 5 yrs. Not today, not next yr., but 5 yrs. That makes sense. The bulk would be @59.
3. When you entered the AF, you probably owed 9 yrs, now it is 11. That means when you place 5 yrs from now for commercial, and the 11 yrs owed, the IPs will bolt at a higher rate. I don't know if you took an AF pilot bonus, but let's be honest a 150K bonus is hard to walk away from. As taxpayers if in 7 yrs is a majority jump to commercial, we as tax payers will absorb that cost.
~~~ For posters that have no connection to the military, pilots/navs at their peak get $845 a month on top of their base pay. Pilots at the 7 yr marker get 150K, 50% up front, 50% remainder split annually over the next 7 yrs. At 16 yr marker they get another big bonus like the 150K if they stay until 21 yrs.

~~~~That is our tax dollars.
Anyone who believes that airlines will not impact these bonuses please contact me because I have a bridge to sell you in NY. These bonuses occur because of the airlines.
Now back on topic...if Kerry gets the nod and Airlines/FedEX/UPS hire those that can bolt will bolt. Kerry as the SOD will be equal to swallowing your own vomit for AD members.
Like bus stated, the military has respect for Panetta, don't ask them to respect a guy that thew his medals over the WH gate.
I don't have the words to describe my angst, or anger if Obama does this.
This pretty much sums it up.
Despite my boycott, I couldn't resist watching the rare Obama press conference yesterday. Absolutely astounding. I can't for the life of me understand the power this man seems to have over people.
I will have to post later, why many see this issue as a key issue and Susan Rice's involvement a problem. Right now, I have to get back to work.
I double down on the LOL.
I suspect that Susan Rice is not to blame, and I don't know that she should be gone after. As I'm listening to the president saying right now, people shouldn't go after her, they should go after him, and I agree. I think that she was purely a mouthpiece, saying what she was told to say. Can't blame her for doing that.
The more obvious question is, who gave her direction to say that? The "intelligence community" doesn't direct her to go all over the television and claim a story. Someone higher than that does. And Obama sure ducked those questions.
So what's wrong with Susan Rice.
Her credentials seem impeccable. Why are McCain and Kerry trying to block this? Is the Benghazi incident that important?
