I agree with you zooser.

How does it play out that there are minutes lost?

Romney gets a 2nd bite at the apple. Mother Jones needs to explain where those 1-2 minutes disappeared or why they vanished.

Like I said before, let's wait until the dust settles. It can actually be negative for the media regarding their jumping on this issue.

I wonder how it will all play out now that it's been admitted by David Corn that the tape was doctored.

geeps, as I said many times before, unfortunately many vote for a President like they were on American Idol or the King/Queen of the prom.

They just like him more. Wasn't that what Gore supporters said back in 00 when it came to Bush?

Many people are willing to trade their personal freedom for the assurance that government is there to take care of them. These ARE the people who will be voting for Barack Obama.

http://www.barackobama.com/life-of-julia/

Mitt  Romney did not just lose the election by stating the obvious.

Pima,

not sure how one links college costs to PBO. Colleges are only following the retail clothing pricing model, ... discount only when you want a certain students. As for jobs for recent graduates, unfortunate that they are caught up in the business and technological cycle. So what do you want the next President to do?

Jazzy,

It appears your concern is the Independents. You think an independent is more concerned about unemployment insurance or finding a job? I think it is the latter. They want to work, but under Obama they can't find a job. Under Obama college costs have sky rocketed and their kids are more in debt without any job opportunities. They have sold off everything they owned in the stock market. Their homes are still below even the prices back in 2000.

Seriously, they have nothing to lose by jumping horses. Romney saying 47% highlights how bad our economy is under Obama's watch. They don't want to hear 4 yrs later it is Bush's fault.

Independents like me know that is no way Roe V Wade will ever be overturned. My right and my DD's to an abortion is safe. Planned parenthood is a 501 and they are going to have money to continue their works. Thus that is not an issue either. I have a problem with the govt telling a private Catholic school they must offer Birth Control via their insurance plan. The employee knows their employer is against BC when they took the job.

Independents like me get Mom and Pop businesses are the thrust of this economy. However, under Obama's administration they play ping pong every yr over the Bush tax cuts. They need long term planning regarding taxes before they hire people.

Independents have seen college costs rise 10-20% a yr. and their kids not getting jobs.

Tell me why Independents would stay with Obama when they have had no change over the last 4 yrs.?

Before we all jump on the bandwagon let's see how this falls out. As of this morning, the topic is starting to change from the comment to the fact of how many people are dependent on the govt.

I think the media has blown this out of control. Was Romney wrong to say that the people who are impacted by govt support will probably not vote for him? That is how I see it. He basically said, I acknowledge that those on govt support won't like me more than Obama.

Do I think he will lose, yes, but I felt that way before these comments. IMPO, our election system mimics American Idol. Many people don't vote on the candidate's ability, they vote for them because they would like to have a beer with them.

Jazzy,

Everyone of those links is slanted to the left. That would be like me saying go to a Right wing site. I don't go to either to get my news, or to influence my position. Seriously, how you can even imply that any of those links are not bias in their position? They are giving what you want to hear.

I don't think Obama is evil, I just believe that we are at a tipping point right now when it comes to our debt. 47% is incredibly high, and like SS, we soon may have more people on the doles than those supporting them.

It is important to address this issue. It is a moment of the Emperor has no clothes on!

I have 1 child that just graduated college last May, and 2 more in college right now. My friends and siblings are in the same position as my family. Nobody said that these kids must go to a 4 yr private college and take 100K in loans to get a degree in Fashion Design. They chose this path.

In VA and NC, it has become very popular for kids to go to CC for 2 yrs and transferring over as a jr. so they don't incur the debt. They have a great system, pull a 3.0 at the CC and you are automatically accepted to any state college. These kids do it because of UVA and UNCCH. They understand the long term picture. Their diploma will state UVA (#2 Public U in the nation) and UNCCH (#5) matters for employers. Their bill will be 60 K over 4 yrs instead of 100K. They were fiscally smart.

Than there are people like my SIL, her DD is at a no name college, that costs 40K+ a yr. and they are taking 25K a yr in loans for her to take classes like Intro to Chocolate. Her major is Interior Design. They are in this debt,, not because she is at YHSSPM, she is because it was the only school that sent her a Congrats letter we are pleased to offer.... It was their pride that put them in debt when it comes to college loans.

I am not going to host a pity party when they placed their self into this situation so they could keep up with the Jones's, i.e. have to go to a 4 yr, any 4 yr no matter what cost. I get kids are going in debt for college, and I am not casting stones. Our DD has taken FAFSA loans for the last 2 yrs. However she is going to a nationally ranked college and is smart enough to major in a degree that will get her a job upon graduation. Not only is she majoring in 1, she is majoring in 2 degrees. She has a plan B in place in case she can't get hired for her Plan A.

Wow this tape was made on May 17.

I wonder what Mother Jones is so worried about that they released it this week.  Obama administration's evident foreign policy incompetence and weakness?

Did Romney use the word "moochers?"

I doubt that Republicans, even with Romney at the head of the ticket, will lose the South or Bible Belt Midwest.   Where the "moochers" talk will hurt him, I hope, is with the disaffected Independents who are not happy with the economy and who are barely hanging on by their toenails and don't pay federal income taxes because of tax credits aimed at the working poor.  It's the Democrats job to make sure the evidence of Romney's disdain and unconcern for them gets past the cocoon of protection that will be erected around the R candidate by Fox News, the Murdoch-owned newspapers, and other conservative media.

Because once they get a whiff of it, they're not to want Romney to be president.

Something else to ponder: his voice drips with contempt for people who don't pay federal income taxes because either they don't make enough money or they take advantage of tax credits designed to help people at their income level.   Yet MR still refuses to release his tax returns beyond the two-year period when he knew he would be running for president.  For all we know, there are years when he was one of the 47 percent.

He now has to answer questions and produce details about his tax reform plan.....who it hits and who it benefits.   Or he's toast.

I only linked it to PBO because he said this at the DNC convention. I linked it also because how do state colleges get funding? RE taxes. RE taxes are linked to property assessment. If properties are foreclosed, RE taxes aren't collected. That trickles down to their own budget.

I agree they are following the model you stated, if you are willing to pay they will take your money.

I want our next President to step in and say if you take Pell Grants, than your increase must be tied to the COL. People never look at the endowments at their college they just accept as fact/life. Pell is federal.

Harvard has a 32 BN, yes, BILLION endowment. Why any student should be on loans is criminal especially since some of them are on Pell Grants from the govt.

Penn State endowment is 1.8 BN

UCLA is 1.5 BN

They are taking tax dollars from the govt while they reap gains for their investments.

http://philanthropy.com/blogs/philanthropytoday/in-education-ucla-endowment-is-fastest-growing-among-major-u-s-schools/45636
http://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2011/09/harvard-university-endowment-earns-21-4-percent-return-for-fiscal-year/

Don't scream foul that kids are so in debt, when you don't realize that their school is double dipping.

Like corporations they found a loop hole. I want that closed. Get paid using Pell and FAFSA, than tuition should be tied to COL.

Ask youself if the colleges accept federal money, shouldn't they require a stop mechanism when they increas their tuition by 10-15% per year while they also never touch their endowment?  Are you not aghast that Harvard has 32 BN in endowment and they have students taking loans.  Okay, Harvard is private.  UNCCH with 2.2. BN is not private.  UCLA  and PSU are not private, nor is UVA with 1.5 BN.  The thing is they have Pell and FAFSA students, and they have increased the cost to attend more than the COL.

Interpret that map of USA. Not pretty when you take it further.

Deep South states pay the least in taxes. If R's want to cut expenditures, the cuts will affect the southern states very hard. If the R's want to increase the tax base, the middle class who are on the low end bubble, will pay taxes. When the Southern populace realize the impact of "boardening", the R's will lose congressional seats and the electorial college.

Okay, to answer your question, if Democrats use protecting Medicare to defeat Republicans it doesn't creep me out.

"and has now turned it into a major campaign news story" As if it wasn't being pushed as a "major campaign news story" before he spoke. What is the MSM so afraid of ? If they are so confident O has it sewn up, why are they working overtime to discredit Romney constantly? Six or more of the top ten stories on Politico today were about Romney. Amid turmoil in the Mideast, Chicago teachers' strike, and economic news of major importance, etc. All the polls are not pointing in O's direction, as they want us to believe, or they wouldn't be so hysterical about Mitt. They aired a major portion of Mitt speaking btw. Nothing at all outrageous there.

Isn't the Medicare scare how the Republicans won back the house in 2010 after Obama trimmed costs in the Medicare advantage program?

Did it creep you out back then?

Just click on the blue "today" in the first line in the first post.  Or go to Mother Jones.  Or Huffington Post or Talking Points Memo.  Or Slate.  Or Salon.   Or google his recent response at a press conference in S. California today in which he doubles down and has now turned it into a mainstream campaign news story.

Bus, maybe he really is a caring person.   He just isn't able to express it, I guess.   What bothers me the most is not the callousness of dismissing the working poor and poor as entitlement whores and victim-losers......it's the willful clueless ignorance that these 47 percent are Obama voters.    A lot of them aren't.   They're struggling Americans of the persuasion he professes to really care about: Republican voters.   He just isn't equipped to consider the scope of his denigrating comments before he says them.  As we have seen again and again and again.

As Colin Powell would say (has said), "Come on, Mitt. Think!"

Nobody is stupid enough to believe that Mitt Romney doesn't care about 47% of the American people. He was obviously talking about what vote they were going after(and since I haven't seen the "secret recording", how do I know this isn't all out of context hearsay, along the lines of the usual political spin)?

I don't think Romney is going to get elected either. But I sure don't think it's because of every time the dems think they caught Romney in a gaffe or a moment they could spin, and they yell, "Look, look at this! Now he could NEVER get elected! And how about now? Now? Well, what about this time? There's no WAY he can get elected now!"

So many times in the past few months the election has been declared over. I guess we may just as well not even vote.

It's so Romney.

Clueless and inaccurate.

Of the 47 percent who don't pay income tax, of course not all of them are Obama voters.    They are often senior citizens living only on social security, without big nest eggs; they are minimun wage workers struggling to cobble together a living working more than one job; they are college students working to pay bills, and underemployed young adults.   They are people swept out of work by the recession who got some temporary tax abatement as part of the Obama stimulus.

And some of them vote Republican.   Maybe they still will.   But the wafflers....the independents.....if the Democrats use this video to their advantage, it will be devastating.

Because not only does Romney bring, in the words of one blogger, Tea Party rhetoric to a new and stupid level, he adds that he doesn't care about these people.

Thought "You didn't build that" was effective? (Not)

Try: "If you're struggling to make ends meet on a minimum wage, Mitt Romney doesn't care about you."

"If you don't pay income tax because you only receive Social Security, Mitt Romney doesn't care about you."

"If you got some temporary help from paying taxes so you could get back on your feet, Mitt Romney doesn't care about you>"

"If you're a college student, trying to earn a living and pay off your student loans, Mitt Romney doesn't care about you."

That's what I would do if I was running the opposition campaign.

And, true to form, the far-right now in control of the Republican party will double down and defend it.

He lost this election way before now.  He lost when he swung way to the right instead of moving to the center.  If he hadn't caved into the tea party, he would have a crushing victory over Obama.  The Republican party with these bozos has become totally inept except for their ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Yeah, I saw this. I was more irritated by the line that food is an entitlement. I don't know, I kind of thought society should strive to at least feed its people. *shrug*

Nothing shocks me in politics anymore. Nothing.

Today, Mitt Romney Lost the Election

You can mark my prediction now: A secret recording from a closed-door Mitt Romneyfundraiser, released today by David Corn at Mother Jones, has killed Mitt Romney's campaign for president.

On the tape, Romney explains that his electoral strategy involves writing off nearly half the country as unmoveable Obama voters. As Romney explains, 47 percent of Americans "believe that they are victims." He laments: "I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

So what's the upshot? "My job is not to worry about those people," he says. He also notes, describing President Obama's base, "These are people who pay no income tax. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax."

This is an utter disaster for Romney.

Romney already has trouble relating to the public and convincing people he cares about them. Now, he's been caught on video saying that nearly half the country consists of hopeless losers.

Romney has been vigorously denying President Obama's claims that his tax plan would raise taxes on the middle class. Now, he's been caught on video suggesting that low- and middle-income Americans are undertaxed.

(That one is especially problematic given the speculation about what's on Mitt's unreleased pre-2010 tax returns.)

Corn tells us there are more embarrassing moments on segments of the video he hasn't released yet. Romney jokes that he'd be more likely to win the election if he were Hispanic. He makes some awkward comments about whether he was born with a "silver spoon" in his mouth.

But those are survivable. The really disastrous thing is the clip about "victims," and the combination of contempt and pity that Romney shows for anyone who isn't going to vote for him.

Romney is the most opaque presidential nominee since Nixon, and people have been reduced to guessing what his true feelings are. This video provides an answer: He feels that you're a loser. It's not an answer that wins elections.

I don't recall that being a big exit poll issue so, no, the creep escaped me.

It can't be that painful a question and considering your topic and your posts, it seems a fair one.

Umm.. demographics have a good bit to do with that kind of map and their voting patterns.

jazzy, seriously: doesn't it kind of creep you out when the minority leader of the House, a democrat, crows "Medicare is going to win back the house for us"? I mean, I understand it's politics and all but...  doesn't that, knowing what we both know about the sustainability of Medicare's financing model and the economic realities of the country, kind of creep you out? That a party, if you were looking for an analogy, looks nothing so much as like a parent that's crippled their kid just so they'll hang around and not leave them all alone?

Yawn.

There doesn't seem to be a transcript yet, which makes it so much easier to cobble future ads from fragments, but the first few panels didn't seem to include any ideas as to relative merits of eugenics, euthanasia, a final soulution, etc.

There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…These are people who pay no income tax.

That a large number of people actually agree with this may very well be a shock to some of you but that's what it is. Besides that, the real problem for the DNC and David Corn lies in getting every one of the "47%" to the polls so they can punch the clock and keep the gravy train running. Could be it'll sound like too much effort on their part.

And, Corn just got his hands on this, it's all new, never before heard Romney, so shocking the NYT and dependents are gearing up for another press run, right in the middle of the meltdown of Obama's middle east policy.

Right.

You know what might lose PBO the campaign? This constant juvenile drumbeat about how horrible Romney is.

People are not that stupid.  In a week of crisis in the world, a "spontaneous demonstration"" based on a video" which just happened to take place on 9/11, Obama is off par-tay-ing with Beyonce and J-Z, and all we are hearing about in the news is ROMNEY ROMNEY ROMNEY.

Democrat partisans are looking ridiculous.

Ha ha. Sounds like a disaster at first glance, doesn't it? Esp. coming David Corn at  Mother Jones. smile

Until we stop to ponder that huge numbers of Americans agree with this assessment.

....and the combination of contempt and pity that Romney shows for anyone who isn't going to vote for him.

Kind of like PBO when he talked about those bitter clingers who were never going to vote for him? hmm
