I saw this on the news a few days ago. Insane is all I can say. Wells owes them millions in my opinion for punitive damages. Pictures, momentos are gone forever.
I am not someone that believes in punitive damages on a whole, but in this case, if I was on the jury it would be millions. I have things in my home that are unique family items. Baby photo albums, that only Bullet and I have. The handmade quilts my sister made for all of my children's 1st birthday. My grandmother's curtains created by Aunt that are 70 yrs old. Framed kids artwork...yes, the kids butterfly splat every kid makes in pre school is framed art in my house. The portrait of my grandfather as Mayor of my home town that is 75 yrs old. The framed war bond that they had in their home.
None of that can be now handed down to my kids. They created undue emotional pain with being wrongly foreclosed, but on top of that they handled their items as trash.
I don't hold the CEO responsible per se, because I doubt he knows every foreclosure case. I hold him responsible because some manager somewhere in that chain was in charge, and they screwed up! That manager and their immediate manager should be fired!

the aggrieved should also demand an apology from the Wells Fargo's CEO besides compensory, punitive, and legal fees. I'd bet that Wells Fargo and other financial institutions will in the future be more carefull if the contrite CEO bows very deeply.
