"There's just nothing it wants there. Sadly, that's what war is about"
Though we did go to war in Libya. I suppose that was for what Britain and France wanted there. Not quite sure what would be better to go to war for, though, then national interests. Self defense seems a more reasonable rationale, perhaps.
Oh yeah, I know we didn't go to war in Libya. A few missiles does not a war make.
But nothing people in the US want, I mean easily exploited resources. But national interest isn't really the best motive for war. One would think that, ideally, war would be fought to end the suffering and improve the lives of others. Though war invariably shatters countless lives.
The real problem is corporations that leverage political influence into military action to protect their business interests. $100,000,000 in contributions commands trillions of dollars in military expenditures.
If the oil companies had to pay for their own regime change and security, instead of dumping the cost off their bottom line and onto the rest of US society, alternative sources of energy would be a lot more attractive.
The plus trillion dollar costs of the Middle Eastern wars over the years should be reflected in the cost of oil, not extorted as taxes to support military actions.
I am not even saying the oil companies should not be allowed to oppress the locals. I am just saying they should bear the TOTAL cost of their enterprise and these costs should be included in the costs of their products.
