Mini's wife does post using his screen name, but she signs her posts with her name, Ellen.

You're probably right.   Maybe this thread can be made private or moved to the private section.

I just posted a political comment on a CC thread.

It will probably be deleted.

I may get banned.

I feel so deliciously naughty! (Hey at my age you do what you can.)

Mini thinks its safer for women in the Peace Corps than to be around US military members.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is with Mini?  For years I thought he was extreme.  Then his posts seemed ok for a bit, then back to extreme.    Is he a cloaked mod?  Or just a mod-pal?   Is Sybbie a cloaked mod? If so, what's her mod name?  She can be very nasty with no fears of being slapped.    Does Entomom have a cloaked name?

I really try to avoid controversy on that forum because I don't like the way the mods and mod-pals gang up on someone whose views aren't in line with theirs.   I once advised a student how to handle his (senseless) suspension with his college apps, and some of the mods and pals went nuts that I was making suggestions that could result in the student not having to report the (senseless) suspension.  Seriously?  Do they really think a kid shouldn't be admitted into any reputable university because some educator decreed that a minor offense deserved a suspension while another educator somewhere else wouldn't?  Sorry, but that's giving educators too much power without any recourse.

Seriously, the mods' "holier than thou" crap gets old.  Every one of them would resort to whatever means possible in order to avoid having their child's app have a negative aspect.

Because I have a close friend whose son was expelled from my kids' school over NOTHING (seriously, I'm sure the principal regrets in hindsight), I am very sensitive to the fact that some schools over-react and suspend or expel over minor offenses -  while the "constantly bratty" kids are allowed to remain because their brattiness only reaches the level of constantly being put in detention.   However, the kid who has been a "good kid" but has done something that one person has arbitrarily decided reaches the suspension mark,  now has to report a suspension/expulsion on his college apps, while the brats have a clean record since detentions aren't reported?  (No wonder some families homeschool...crazy schools won't be able to record idiocy on their kids' records)

Gosh, you people are making me hungry. Why does every conversation turn towards desserts with this crowd? I'll go with tiramisu, it covers all the major food categories.

Can't eat dairy? That's awful. Well, here's wishing chocolate and nut covered? tofutti to you. Yikes, I mean, yum.

On another note...my dessert of choice (at least currently)...tiramisu!!! chew.gif

As someone who can't eat dairy, I don't know why you have to taunt me with nut covered sundaes.  It is unimaginably cruel.

Crumbcakes aren't my favorite, just for the record.  I am more the milk chocolate cake kind of girl.

In honor of Pi day, I did have a couple of bites of an amazing turtle pie with oreo cookie crust.  It was amazing.

I think we have had more hits on the forum today than in a long time.  smile

I just have to say that, from the point of view of someone who opens up this thread to read the post just before this one, you would think you had definitely wandered into a completely different kind of thread.

Okay, I can buy that too FULL argument. Though I fear it is full of useless, trivial crap. I suppose I would go for that crumb cake if it was soaked in rum or something else highly alcoholic.

Ah, well, nothing too exciting at all. Merely on one post, jym said:

""This thread is beginning to have that "ode to >>" feel to it, only the lament is to the old pol forum. IMO, if something geels boring, then by all means liven it up."

Later on, I responded to that line by saying:

"Certainly, there are those that enjoy livening up the duller forums by posting vicious personal attacks, waiting for the person to heatedly respond....and then editing their earlier attacking posts so it appears as if the responder is overreacting.

Then again, most of us are not creative nor destructive enough to enjoy livening up forums in that way."

I thought it was relatively tame, not pointed towards a specific person, just a general commentary upon some posters I had read. And she responded angrily, accusing me of attacking her, being crazy, paranoid, on and on. It was quite an overreaction for nothing much, didn't seem that big a deal to me. Maybe that's why they cleaned it up. I'm not much into getting into it with people. But sometimes I can't shut up. Just trying to liven things up a bit. Not trying to slam cc or anything, just calling em as I see em.

Don't like sand, but do like crumbcake? Hmmm...don't they taste about the same?

Yes, it did seem odd that those exchanges were erased, and the original posts stood. But then again, to give credit to the mods, maybe they were just deleting what could have been construed as an uglier exchange, and let the tamer posts stand. I actually don't understand why she got so inflamed over such a harmless, non-specific post I made. Then again, okay, I admit it, I don't even remember what ad hominem means!!! I am getting old and losing my mind......

What I find interesting, busdriver, is that the moderators left your original post and my comment, but erased jym's complaint and your colloquy with her.  Maybe that was inadvertent, who knows?

I didn't think they were infractions, either.  Just thought it was amusing how quickly you were reported to a moderator for an non-existent ad hominem.  And the outrage!

Crumbcake is delicious.  Those are fighting words!

I am not sure if it was over 60 today.  There are some beautiful clouds right now and it was a little cold, but not icy.  We can go to the beach when it's cold, you know. People wear sandals year round (which is always funny during the rainy season).

Also,  did I mention to you that I don't like sand?

No Samurai, nobody has slapped me with an infraction. I'm not sure what infraction I could have committed, except for the infraction of "saying something honestly that may have offended a favored friend?" I don't know if that's in the fine print, but I have more faith in the mods than that! What I briefly said was very tame (unless it struck too close to the truth for one), and shouldn't bother anyone except those that engage in that sort of behavior. I'm really not trying to stir up trouble, sometimes there are times you can't resist slipping in an observation (though it can be irritating).

And poetgrl, how can one refrain from making sly and snarky comments about those who like CRUMBCAKE (gag) and brag about their over 60 degree weather? Those are serious infractions of judgement, really!

Maybe there's something wrong with me, but I never even CARE if somebody says something cranky to me, or even occaisonally attacks me outright, on CC.  I'm just as likely to agree with them on a different thread or ask them a question on another one as I am the person who didn't get cranky with me.  confuse

That said, Busdriver, really?  I mean, really?  You had to go there.

I love how some of those comments disappeared....exactly how you predicted, busdriver.

Did the moderator get in touch with you and slap you for an infraction?  I am still trying to figure out what the ad hominem was on that thread.

Oh, I know, Donna! I knew exactly what you meant, I wasn't falling for the later comment that tried to turn your mild question into some sort of support for "reporting my ad hominem attack". I am surprised that your comment lasted two minutes and didn't disappear along with the others. I wasn't really trying to start a ruckus, just a rather tame observation (as far as cc goes), and was kind of surprised for one poster to say I was "attacking her", "crazy", "paranoid" and I was being reported. Sounded like a heck of an overreaction to me. But I'm not really looking to get into a pissing contest with anyone, that's not my cup of tea.

I always hope that I haven't said anything that I would live to regret. Sometimes I have said things that I've later thought sounded harsh or thoughtless, but at least one generally has the opportunity to explain or apologize later. To those on here that I have said something cranky to---I'm sorry!

Busdriver, just fyi, my saying "I wonder how long that comment is going to last," as a response to your latest comment in that thread on CC, wasn't intended as a substantive criticism.  It was more of a curiosity, ready to take bets kind of thing.  (My bet is, not long!)

In terms of anonymity, I've never made a secret of the fact that I use my real first name both on CC and here, as well as in the handful of other places on the Internet where I ever post.  Despite having shared some very personal information on CC in the last two years.  I've always assumed that in the unlikely event someone cared to, they could figure out my last name in about 10 minutes.  But I've never posted a single thing I'd be ashamed or embarrassed to have people know.  Even though a lot of it isn't generally known to most people I interact with in my daily life.  Nor have I ever said anything to anyone that I wouldn't be willing to defend face to face (or apologize for, as the case may be).

I changed my name on this board, and after 5+ years on cc, I was ready for a change. In my first post, I introduced myself with my cc user name, so it wasn't wasn't for anonymity.

Yeah. It's boring. The Cafe has always been boring to me. The Parent's Cafe/Forum used to be semi interesting, even to me as a college student, but now it's like on repeat. College Life sucks because it's 90% of the time one of two topics: OMG TEH LIBERAL ARTZ MUST DIE!!!!! or OMG I HAVE NO LIFE HELP!

Seriously. It's annoying.

I consider myself pretty honest, so I didn't feel comfortable changing my user name from the one I used on CC. I've also shared a lot of personal information, which some people would not consider very prudent, but so far, no one has used it against me.  I have a lot of respect/affection for many of the regulars I've come to know from CC, so I wanted to be transparent in my user identity. But, I'll not disparage anyone who opts to use a different user name (with one possible exception)evileye who shall remain nameless...Ha!

Anonymity is a cause for people to say the kinds of things they wouldn't say to people face-to-face, which is unfortunate, really.  It's like "road rage."  People will stand in a traffic jam line at an amusement park, face to face and be pleasant.  Nobody shouts at the people in front of them to "get moving!"

But, back out on the highway, who knows what they will say or do?

People change.  I'm not in the mood to hold anyone to anything from the past anymore.  Just in general, in my life, as well.  It's too exhausting to stay angry or annoyed.  I prefer to allow people to change and grow and to meet them as they are today, regardless of past behavior.

Anyone is welcome to share or not share their screennames.  I was and am still fine with that.

My point is that sometimes it is the anonymity which has created this culture of fear.  And rightly so.  I have said that ever since I started this board - you will see multiple references to that.

Some people have behaved badly towards one another in the past.  Sometimes with the help of mods.  For whatever reason.

I make no bones about changing my name and identity.  I would also change my name on CC if I could.    I thought when you started the forum you indicated that anyone was welcome to share who they were on CC- or not.   If people are tracking my IP address and sniffing out my identity, that's fine.

I am not a moderator on CC, am not friends with any moderators and have never been a moderator.

Screennames.

I find it amusing when longtime CC posters come over here and change their screennames.  You can change the name you go by, but that doesn't mean you change your writing style.

Why be anonymous on the new board?  It's made up of 99% CC members.

I can't speak for anyone else with regards to re-registering, but we have seen multiple posters banned for some pretty small offenses at CC.  They tend to stay away, realizing the ridiculousness of being banned and move on.  Others choose to come back, in different forms.  Some repeatedly.

But others have been attacked - I am not taking sides here - and we have seen countless times the moderators have taken different stands about who to support and who not to support.  It all seems a little arbitrary.

I also have noted that at least one long-standing rivalry goes back not just to the early days at CC, but predating it, to a completely DIFFERENT DISCUSSION FORUM.  These grudges are ugly and there is some bad blood, there. I wish that we can move on from it.  I do understand the reasons for the hard feelings, on both sides.  I have heard them articulated from multiple people.

I understand the difficulty in moderating a board of the size of CC.  However, I am often bewildered at the application of moderating.  I appreciated hearing Xiggi's points several weeks ago, and they were well taken.  It's frustrating at times, when we see that some people can attack and not be slapped, and others are, for things that often are of the lesser offense.

The nature of deleting posts and banning posters can make it hard to know what came first, the offense or the defense.  It can change the whole tone of a thread.  And it's been happening for a hell of a long time at CC.  Hence, the hard feelings.

Anonymous message boards will always have their faults.

Also, we have seen people overshare and then another poster latches onto one piece of information - or several, and abuses this information to launch into personal attacks. It's ugly.  It's also not as anonymous as we think it is.  If you think that you are completely protected by choosing a new screenname, you might be wrong.

Some posts last indefinitely on the internet, even when you have forgotten it. It's the nature of the beast.

I have seen several recent shows on this subject, and yes, you're right about the PC.  Mini makes many unsubstantiated, sweeping comments, such as that Puget Sound Community College's nursing program is "more selective" than Harvard. Anything anti-military will be repeated ad nauseam by mini. Bashing the military is one of his favorite pasttimes!

I mean how many different ways can we discuss renovating a home, or buying and appliance?
