What I cannot understand is WHY the helmets are hard.

A quarter inch of medium density polyurethane foam, nicely painted with the team logo, would reduce concussions significantly.

It is the same principle as "crumple zones" in modern automobiles. Energy dissipated more slowly and over a larger area causes less biological tramua. 

Remember back in the olden days when crashing your Chey into a telephone pole at 40 mph was an almost guaranteed death sentence?
