We have an angel tree in our lobby and I think the response has been favorable. I hope people don't forget to help those less fortunate even in these tough economic times.
My family has been active participants and volunteers for Adopt-a-Child program in my city for almost 10 years. When I coached middle school basketball, I required the team to also participate. The program serves about 3000 families.
My family will adopt a family, usually 3-5 children and get them coats, hats, gloves, several outfits, toys and books. The organization sponsors the event and it really is a party and you get to meet your "adopted children".
My volunteer job is working in the room where people who, for whatever reason, do not/cannot stay to meet their "kids" and hold on to the gifts. We get kids who have been adopted, yet the people don't show up.
This is simply heartbreaking. I'm going to make sure that my family becomes Secret Santa to some of these kids this year. Imagine being a young child and having to carry the burden of the financial hardship for your family. Bless their hearts.
