IMO it should be repealed, but it needs to be done correctly. There is probably a lot of preparation that needs to happen first, no? Like, spousal benefits and such? Maybe even housing related things?

But Republicans in the Senate blocked repeal. I think their principled argument is, "Gays are yucky."
Amusingly enough, it seems to be those Republican congressmen most anti-gay who turn out to be closeted homosexuals. Or pedophiles, sadly.

For those who are for DADT, I usually throw this out there...

Open militaries:
Most of Europe, most of South America, Australia, Canada

Those without gays in the military:
Most of Africa, most of the Middle East, China

Which list would YOU rather be on?

Of course, most people that are pro-DADT don't answer me. They just change topics lol.

The Chiefs of Staff have said they want repeal. People actually in the military are fine with repeal, by over a 2 to 1 margin.

But Republicans in the Senate blocked repeal. I think their principled argument is, "Gays are yucky."

If my son calls a woman of higher rank, "sir", he will be doing drill and grunt work until he gets his commission.

Haha, I heard that "Sir" was applied regardless of gender in the military. Faulty information?

I have a son in ROTC.  I don't think he cares one way or the other, but it's the military. They tell YOU what to think.  You don't really get a chance to tell them. Or order your superiors to do anything.

Then you say, "thank you ma'am" or  "thank you, sir"

I haven't actually heard the reasons for opposition to an appeal. I wonder what they are. Isn't the majority of military personnel in favor of a repeal? Or are they just apathetic?

Apparently now Senators Lugar, Voinovich, Snowe and Collins might vote to overturn the Republican filibuster on the defense bill with DADT, in exchange for an extended debate on a number of other issues in the bill.

It's a sad thing that DADT still exists, even though the large majority of Americans oppose it. What a great thing a DADT repeal would be.
