Since I dabble in stock and DW's past employer is a supplier to Boeing and GE, I doubt that Boeing would have or even could have, self-ground the 787, until a major disaster. JAL as revealed that it had swapped out 10 batteries in its 787 Fleet, prior to the grounding.
For Boeing, its shareholders, suppliers, and flyers, We should be thankful for the FAA. Did anyone notice that not one stakeholder complained about the grounding. Money well spent.
