When I was originally looking for a dog for our family, 18 years ago, I considered a boxer, but then I heard that they required more physical force to train, and since the dog was primarily to be a children's pet, we decided on a lab.
Who had been bred for sport and was VERY high energy for about four years. Since she was black, & an old style lab, rather than the more slender AKC type, she also was apparently quite intimidating to many people. Even when she had just dropped a tennis ball at their feet and was waiting expectantly for them to throw it.
Dogs have evolved to be quite responsive to humans & their cues, so I am not surprised that a dog would react to something he was watching from a ft or so away with his human. Ive seen both my dog and our cats react to things on the television which was considerably farther away. Can you tell I am really missing our pets? I am waiting till I can walk more consistently though before I decide to get one, although since my daughter has been fostering dogs, she has been sending me lots of cute puppy pics. I like the temperament of labs, but I need a dog that I can carry down the stairs if I need to because our pets live a very long time.
( our dog was 16 & our cats were 21 & 19 when they died)
huh. It looks likee Safari doesnt show formatting on my ipad, but Puffin does although it is very laggy to work with. Anyone have a better browser for ios on this forum?
Aww, I'm so sorry, ek. I'm looking for pet friendly apartments because I miss having animals around me sooooo much. Our current dog is 5 (I cannot believe she's already been in our lives for four years)- before that we had her sister who passed away after only a few months of being with us. She had something wrong with her brain that was inoperable and incurable by the time we found it. She had been a bait dog like her sister so they obviously didn't have vet care until their rescue. Before her we had a rott/GSD who lived to be ~12 and a cat that lived until ~20. All three passed away within months of each other. It was the hardest year.
It sounds like you might want to consider adopting an adult fur baby (of necessary small size) as they'll be much calmer.
We've fostered dogs for a long time. Our friends called us the animal hotel (we had a few cats in there, too). Funny enough (well, quite tragic, not funny) the only dog we've ever had that we had to give back to the shelter was a black lab mutt. We know she was heavily abused and neglected. She bit both my mom and a friend of mine- enough that it required quite a few stitches each time. With other dogs and kids around, we just couldn't take that risk. Broke our hearts but it is what it is :/. Every other lab I've ever met has been a total goofball. I'd have absolutely no hesitation in adopting one.
My sister has a pug. That thing is just terrifying. I'm convinced it's dying every time it runs three steps. It also terrorizes my pit bull. Whenever my dog hears my sister's car, she'll run under the table and start whining. The pug constantly bites her paws.

Was never interested in the shunning strategy either...that was a biggie over there, if I remember correctly.
Actually, one could be conservative--if that definition was confined to limited government, balanced budget, et. --- conservative social issue views -- in no way tolerated. I used to say that CC was a primer of the intolerance of the professed tolerant. Not sure that won me any friends either.
For some reason, that short answer really cracks me up. I can imagine how you're saying that.....Nnnope!
But because I started laughing, my dogs are interested, and think something fun is going to happen, so now they're staring me down. Guess I'd better take these non-fertile young women on a walk.
...it's responding in a way that pisses them off"
Oh, no doubt. I responded to my time-out by inquiring of Snoozie why participants in the forum, who are adults, should be treated as children and not given the opportunity to resolve their differences on their own. I would never use bad language. At the time, my overall conservative bent did not sit well. Nor am I constitutionally able to shuck and jive in the presence of liberals, as some of the popular conservatives over there were able to do. Still can't .

I have responded to a temporary ban in Pam's and not had more infractions as a result, either. Perhaps it is your technique that got you in trouble longprime.
I replied to an infraction and didn't get another infraction for it. Then again, I apologized because I deserved it, for bad language, and was obviously in the wrong. I can't imagine getting another infraction for an apology....so it's not just responding to a pm, apparently it's responding in a way that pisses them off.
"For pm (reply to moderator) to one of their timeouts. If you reply in the reply area of your infraction notification (to moderator), you will get another infraction or banning. "
Yep. I was banned for life (the drama!) for talking back to Snoozie in the "reply area."
CC is a site run by a mean girl clique and their fanboys.
Not worth the stress.
--for pm (reply to moderator) to one of their timeouts. If you reply in the reply area of your infraction notification (to moderator), you will get another infraction or banning. If I remember, also, I, pm'ed a moderator on their lack of obvious inattention to their rules, got me some demerits. Doesn't matter, I'm more into washlet bidets, prospecting for DS, and the fine art of corralling clams.

mainelonghorn=With that, I am closing this thread, since according to the Terms of Service, "discussion of moderator actions and forum policies is welcomed via private message or e-mail; these issues are off-topic for the forums."
A pm will get you banned.
Not the thread 's topic but Mainelonghorn's final comment: "discussion of moderator actions and forum policies is welcomed via private message of e-mail." Either she is making new policy or she is lying. I don't call many people liars.
