Generally, I really like Clinton, but given that I was 5 when DOMA was passed, I do not understand for the life of me why it was signed in to law. I guess it was just the political climate of the time? If so, damn, look at the strides we've made in less than 2 decades.

^ I second you there.

It's interesting. States are taking back their power (or attempting to) by legalizing gay marriage and marijuana on a state level (I do think this is the start of the tide turning for both issues). I would hope this would be something that could be a bipartisan issue- giving the power back to the states (or at least framing the debate in that way). Democrats want them legalized (mostly) and Republicans want state power. It seems like it should (in theory) be a win/win.

But nothing ever works in reality like it should in theory.

I hate this! I support gay marriage, I just hate the fact even if the state recognizes it, the fed. doesn't.

I voted for Romney, but I hope Obama makes this issue part of his 2nd term issue. If it was a VA issue I would have supported the legalization.

Old joke...why shouldn't they be as miserable as us? ;)

Washington passed as well! Though I'm a bit confused about the Washington one. It doesn't seem to be state law but I can't quite figure out what it is.

This make me so incredibly happy. I believe the tide has turned. While I don't see this passing nationally or in many red states any time soon, I am hoping beyond hope that it is at least a trend in blue and libertarian states. Thank you, Maine and Maryland (and Washington?).

Good for Maine!  They did it without having a court pretend the consitution requires gay marriage.

"For the first time, voters in Maine and Maryland voted to allow loving couples to make lifelong commitments through marriage
