People are dumb.  They think you just raise wages to a 'living' level and everything becomes more hunky dory.

Well, what happens when prices of goods / services go up 20% to offset it?

Other than that a lot of the more visible media is peachy-keen with the concept, it's probably because they realize Peoria isn't.

Is this the flip side of "a living wage"? That while everyone deserves to have their needs met, someone does have to be available to meet them and that the lucky will be more willing to pony it on up for the communal good if society frowns on their success?

They're lurching around for a campaign theme.... how about:

"Re-elect the Socialist - he's out of the closet, loud and proud".

Why isn't the clip of Obama saying this outrageous garbage all over the media? Why do I have to hear about it on this board? (Rhetorical questions. We all know the answer.)

Better question to the Romney team: Why isn't there already an ad out there to at least try to prime the slanted media pump?

I had a problem with this argument for the successful to not feel so self-satisfied when Elizabeth Warren said it first, but at least she made her case with some intelligence and coherence. It might work in the Boston suburbs, but I don't think it will play in Peoria.

I wish somebody else would make a successful business happen for me. I keep hoping and it's not happening. Do I actually have to do something?

"If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen."

I still can't get over this line....he has absolutely no clue what business owners go through..none.

somebody else made it happen..really??

Who was he speaking to, a bunch of 5 year olds?

Now children, imagine if everyone had their own fire service.  That sure would be a hard way to organize fighting fires, wouldn't it?  So what can we learn from this children?  That's right, no one ever does anything on their own.  So children, repeat after me, if you have a business, you didn't create that, someone else made that happen.  And who made that happen?  That's right children, the government made that happen.

I think he's one step away from claiming that he, not Al Gore, actually created the internet

FarmDad has probably has it right.  He's speaking from his personal experience as someone who never was able to do anything without someone else making it happen for him.

"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help."

Maybe Obama was just speaking from his personal experience. You know, help from somebody like Tony Rezko, who enabled him to purchase his $1.65 million home in Chicago for $300,000 less than asking price by having his wife, on the same day, purchase the adjacent property owned by the same seller for above asking price; or from Kelly Welsh, the executive VP at Northern Trust, who served on the board of the University of Chicago hospital where Michelle drew a $317,000 salary dumping poor uninsured patients to South Side community hospitals, and gave the Obama's a sweetheart $1.3 million mortgage loan at below prevailing interest rates; or Bill Ayers, who ghostwrote the best selling fictionalized biography that made him a millionaire.

Gee, and all this time I thought my immigrant father, who came to the US penniless after surviving concentration camps, and worked 7 days a week to build a successful retail business from scratch that is still benefiting his grandchildren... all this time, I thought he was successful because he was smart and worked harder than everybody else. Now I know. SOMEBODY ELSE MADE THAT HAPPEN. Thank you, Mr. President.

I'm with you, geeps. More and more this do-nothing scumbag just makes me want to puke.

It is incredible. The arrogance is so striking. As if business owners aren't giving anything back. As if they aren't paying large amounts of taxes, contributing to charity, providing huge amounts of jobs and health insurance....because they took the risk and the initiative, and did the work.

This is one of the things that drives me crazy about this president. The constant class warfare, the us against them. I hope any business owner who is actually supporting him takes offense at the constant insults, and stops giving him money. I think anyone who owns their own business or knows someone who does, understands how hard it is. How sometimes it's you that doesn't get a paycheck so your employees can, how you can never get time off, how very difficult it is. True, they may have not built the roads in the city that take the customers there (but their taxes contribute, as does everyone elses). Yep, they didn't provide the air that people breathe in their store (though I don't think the government can take credit for that, though they'd like to).

This is our uniter. This is the guy that represents us all, bringing us together. Full of lies and distortions. I swear, any respect I had for him goes out the door when he starts up with this crap.

Here's the whole quote:

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me -- because they want to give something back.  They know they didn’t -- look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own.  You didn’t get there on your own.  I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart.  There are a lot of smart people out there.  It must be because I worked harder than everybody else.  Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.  (Applause.)

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help.  There was a great teacher somewhere in your life.  Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.  Somebody invested in roads and bridges.  If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that.  Somebody else made that happen.  The Internet didn’t get invented on its own.  Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together.  There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own.  I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service.  That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.

Who can read this without wanting to a. cry, b. laugh, c. both.  disbelief

“If you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. ... If you’ve got a business you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

As a small business owner..this really pisses me off.  My father in law also went from knocking on doors trying to get yard maintainance work, to a very successful nursery owner.  Now in their 60's, my in laws are world travelers...they didn't get a penny from anyone.

No Mr. Obama,  no one else "made that happen"...This guy has to go...absolutely clueless.
