I went to Europe for a month when the exchange rate was up at $1.60/1 (in 2008). Made it on $75/day, not including airfare to/from europe and eurail (but including individual train reservations).
I read that some graduatiing kids are traveling overseas after graduation. Good for them.
DS and roommate traveled to China (2006) staying with friends and relatives. Six weeks on <US$3000 ea (they traveled a lot) One roommate dropped out and couldn't find replacement.
DS travelled France (Paris), Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, 6 weeks, may 2008, <US$1000. Couldn't find traveling companion since schools didn't let out until later in May/June. He stayed with friends.
DS did some minor traveling in 2009 when he was working in Germany. Again couldn't find traveling companion, Jan-April.
He was planning to do India this year for roommate's wedding. Couldn't find anyone who could take 2weeks vacation time. A second wedding reception to be held in DC (he's been there and will be staying with another ex- roommate. )
Moral: If you can be flexible in travel plans, look harder for companions, you may luck out and find someone who has connections.
We're going to Ireland/England next summer when I graduate. My cousin, that we basically raised and has gone on to be extremely successful, is paying for us as a way to say thank you to my parents. He's taking the whole family and we're going to visit our family in England and go to Ireland just 'cuz.
Great bit of advice. I want to travel to Spain soon to stay with family but it's SO FREAKING EXPENSIVE to travel right now, especially in Europe :(. However, traveling to Latin America is pretty cheap. I spent less than $1000 when I went there last for 2 months. Probably somewhere in the neighborhood of $600. Now I could do it for cheaper.
