I too frequent CC as a distraction and I learned a lot over there from the occasional odd nuggets of wisdom. I skip any discussion that surrounds abortion or birth control. At this point I think there is no point in discussing it, the talk just deteriorates into feelings of not being heard on both sides.
I have a question for you hope. As a Catholic how do you address the outrage many of us feel over the sex abuse scandal within the church?
I''m glad you asked. I'm sure you've been following the recent abuse case at an elementary school in L.A. I hope people are beginning to wake up to what amounts to a cover-up of abuse in our public schools. Look up Charol Shakeshaft, Hofstra for her study. Here is a recap:
Consider the statistics: In accordance with a requirement of President Bush's No Child Left Behind Act, in 2002 the Department of Education carried out a study of sexual abuse in the school system.
Hofstra University researcher Charol Shakeshaft looked into the problem, and the first thing that came to her mind when Education Week reported on the study were the daily headlines about the Catholic Church.
"[T]hink the Catholic Church has a problem?" she said. "The physical sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests."
The 2002 Department of Education report estimated that from 6 percent to 10 percent of all students in public schools would be victims of abuse before graduation — a staggering statistic.
For obvious reasons, the Church was right not to bring up comparisons at the time the scandal broke. I've taught in secondary public ed for years and I can tell you that many of them are cesspools.
You can draw your own conclusions as to why no one seems interested in cleaning them up.

In this particular case, it happens to go to my personal core belief that it is mean-sprited, petty, and small-minded to mock and ridicule another's religion.
I forgot the Church of England/Episcolian priest ritual. I do remember that the priests wear 3 outer layers of couteurments dating to the Judaism roots.
Saving the world? I'm a headhunter working out of my house - trying to find a few people jobs. Maybe that is saving the world. I haven't been a lawyer since the early 80's. When I did practice, I did medical malpractice defense, civil rights and general insurance defense work.
I didn't realize what the Catholic hierarchy wears goes to core beliefs. I stand corrected.
It's a distraction for me too, cartera--trust me, I just happen to have a good memory about people's "stories"-- although I, admittedly, am not at the present time out there saving the world as you are. Actually I am in the midst of organizing my household belongs, about to cross country to find a house and then sell this one. Not important work--but essential for the well-being of my family nevertheless.
I love how it seems everyone is entitled to cry "offended" except Catholics. We don't get to determine what we should be offended over, for some reason I'm pretty sure I comprehend. Amazing that you get to decide what "goes to the core." I'd like to hear you say that to any of your number of protected groups.
I don't recall seeing the "elderly men in dresses" comments but I skim more than I should and don't tend to retain much from thread to thread. This is all just entertainment to me - a distraction from all the calling and detail work I have to do for my job. I am always suprised when posters bring up things they remember other posters saying on other threads. I seem to reboot on every thread, unless I'm posting on them simultaneously.
You're right that I wouldn't really see "elderly men in dresses" as a slur because it doesn't go to the core of anything and is ceremonial. I'm more likely to refer to the red Ferragomo's or the over the top use of gold.
That was a serious question. I have been on the board for a while too but I can't name anyone who is Jewish. I guess I haven't read or remembered the posts in which they identify themselves as such.
But I'm confused again. Where is the reference to elderly men in dresses?
Mini referred to the Catholic hierarchy many times in that thread as "elderly men in dresses."
He's been ridiculing the Church for as long as I've been reading. New posters don't know his history and debate him in good faith, which I find sad. Truly, he's a bigoted crank on the subject of the RC church.
As for remembering things..I remembered you were a lawyer, remember?
I can tell you about Garland's kids, marite's kids. Donna's cat. Considering religion has so often been the subject of discussion over there, I don't think it's odd I remember people's religions.
What's interesting is that you didn't even pick up on that as a slur.

I admire the Catholics posters who have the patience to engage with the nasty intolerant Catholic-bashing bigots. Then there are always the liberal Catholics who get on and throw the bashers more red meat. Gotta love all the lefty Jewish posters critiquing the Catholic church. I'd love to see what would happen if it were the other way around. This has been going on for years over there.
Damn, I closed the infraction notice before I could tell MLH that it was nice to know her, and that the, King Is A Fink. Gotta wait two weeks b efore saying that. It was a interesting forum but it is time to say it.
private reply to vonlost, moderator who gave me the warning.
"I all difference to you, vonlost, I did make a "problem post report" to a moderator with the reason that this thread is Political. The post that you deleted was a reference.
Very hard to make a complaint in one circumstance and be ignored and then make a veiled reference and get dinged. "
do what you must, but BC on Catholic Campuses is a Political Thread. "
