I happened upon CC, if I remember correctly, the year after my oldest S graduated hs (2004). He was and is a very laid back kid, and his highest ambition was to go to Penn State. My younger S had higher aspirations for himself, and I got sucked into the CC hype pretty quickly, although it took me quite a while to actually register and ask questions.
I personally think CC does nothing but feed the college hype and, yes, profit from it. On the whole, for many reasons (including the one mentioned below) I think it's a pretty sketchy operation.
My S had pretty decent college outcomes, but I can honestly say that he would have had the same outcomes had his mom never happened upon CC. And it would have saved her a ton of grief along the way.
CC will always win this game with college data. So many kids, so many parents, it is hard to establish new forums to get those sheer numbers in to visit a site. It has been around a long time. I read it when my oldest was thinking about college, but it had been thriving before I joined.
You are always welcome to start specific threads of interest, pretty much no matter what the topic. The question is whether specific info for a relatively obscure school will get interest or cyber traffic. The more conversations, the better. If you are trying to inform the public about a specific school that you have important info to share, blogging might get best response.
I think CC is probably the best forum for college applicants and their parents to exchange info.
They have threads for almost every college.
You get into trouble with them when you wander in to the off topic conversations.
Hit the college links for your school, you will get a great insight that no other site can offer. I don't know your college choices, but I would stick with CC, even as a lurker, to see what your peers are like.
Again, college admissions wise, CC is the best.
Politically, it is different.
FWIW, the internet is not anonymous, admission boards use the internet, and If I am correct, they look up luther setzer they will be able to get a bigger picture of you than you ever expected.
Here you go what the admissions dept will see:

I didn't even try to look you up on FB.
We maybe old. but we aren't ignorant.

I have to say that I have not posted there for @2 yrs., still have an open account. I go there for household tips (Parents), because I feel that it is basically as close to dictatorship as you can get. Tick off long term posters, or mods with multiple screen names you will get at least a yellow flag.
I love this site because we don't denigrate posters that we disagree with. It is truly an adult forum regarding our opinions and we not only respect each other's position, but we read them out.
I don't think any poster here is so entrenched that they are unwilling to listen. I left CC because I felt they(mods) allowed certain posters to be bullies and post hateful things. It reminded me of 0 tolerance at schools. The kid who got hit was punished for defending their self because the school had a 0 tolerance policy.
As far as politically goes, I think many feel the same way as you. I don't dislike either candidate, because I don't know them personally. I am not in love with either candidate. Politically, I dislike Obama's campaign more because as a President I think he has now lowered himself to a level, I can't support as Commander in Chief. Romnesia comment turned me off even more, because if that is all you have left to get me to vote for you, I wonder what you are saying about other world leaders, or are you really willing to work across the aisle with the R's.
To me, the unknown at this time is better than what I just lived through for the last 4 yrs. Obama's campaign slogan is Forward. Forward, how? Hope and change didn't work out so great.
Maybe in the next 13 days he can woo me, but on my avatar I bet he can't. All I hear from him is the past, there are no future plans.
Worse yet for him, the internal emails released today showed that they knew within hours of the Benghazi attack, yet PBO went to the UN and said it was not terrorism.
Add that to him blaming sequestration on the Hill, and it won't happen, when in reality the idea of sequestration started in the WH.
I don't trust him. I am smart enough to know that the power is really on the Hill. I think that Obama being re-elected will leave us 4 yrs from now in the same place we are now. Ask a voter when was the last budget passed? I bet the majority would not know that it was 3 yrs ago. This is a president that couldn't even get a budget passed for 3 yrs.

Since this board seems focused on politics, does anyone know of a less hostile equivalent to CC where students and parents can go to exchange information about the higher education process openly?
I got my start on CC and CD mainly because of my lessons learned in boarding high school and engineering university that I wanted to share.
Since those boards were both bad experiences, not because of the members, but because of the owners and moderators, I am laying low for a while until something better appears on the scene.
The same evidently goes for "promoting" awesome books like How to Become a Straight-A Student by Cal Newport since that would constitute "advertising."
Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone. I am registered "No Party Affiliation" but lean in the direction most call "libertarian" though I prefer the label "Objectivist" or "individualist" or similar labels. As for Ron Paul, I like many though not all of his ideas but I will not explore that right now. I dislike Romney but I dislike Obama far more, so you can guess the rest.
As for trying to help young people on CC, I did make a positive difference for some who kindly informed me so. That feels good. But the aggravations of CC itself outweigh those good feelings. Shame on CC for that.

The good news is that with few rules, you can post links and stuff like that. I don't pay anything for site. Would love more traffic here.
Would love more political discussion.
Funny thing happened when we opened this forum - made it bipartisan and gave people a place to chat, having so many folks been given the boot at CC. And yet....most folks didn't find a diverse enough place and stopped coming over here. Too boring, I guess. Or maybe new media, twitter, Facebook etc was more compelling.
I actually went on CC to help students with college advice and found a fairly hostile crowd. I used to give high schoolers advice about the process. Then, was discouraged way too many times by 16 and 17 year olds tell me I was wrong.
Let's just say my advice was not wrong, based on the profession I am in. Doesn't make any damn difference with the high school experts at CC.
I did love the political forum there, even when getting attacked by trolls and mean girls.
It'd be swell if you've some political dissatifactions, Luther.
I suppose it would be too much for longprime to hope for but, if you happened to be another Ron Paul supporter he'd at least have a shoulder to lean on through these difficult times.
Luther,
Feel free to post. Venting is fine.
No porn, no hate speech - other than that, it is all good.
Most of us have been banned at least once from CC.
My main beef is that the CC forum site practically lures eager people accustomed to more lenient forums like this one only to surprise them in unpleasant ways. Yes, I know the "Terms of Service" spell expectations, and I am sure CC knows how many eyes glaze when registering and seeing them. The forums take advantage of the natural human cravings for bonding and belonging and sharing and abuse them for profit at the expense of the participants. After using and abusing them, they toss them like used rags while keeping the goodies for themselves.
Having had a similar bad experience at City-Data (CD) more than a year earlier, a report of which you can read here, I can see the trend just described recurring now at CC. Lesson learned: Beware of forums that exist strictly by driving traffic to them to garner advertising dollars. I have participated in other forums whose owners make money by selling actual products or otherwise pay for themselves in more creative and less intrusive ways. There are "good" and "bad" ways to own and operate discussion forums. Meh.

College Confidential is the City-Data of higher education discussion forums.
I am brand new to this site so I do not want to post a link to a full article I wrote about my experience there but I can if requested and allowed. I found this thread through Google. If it is not appropriate, please tell me now before I incur "infractions" here.
EDIT: Based on subsequent posts, I will stop here and "move on" as the saying goes, but thank you for making this forum available with rules more within the bounds of reason and allowing me to vent.
