Spokeo, Facebook, MyLife...so many online engines that might have had your number, even if unlisted.
I have been able to track down old friends using some of these social networking sites, and sometimes information is available for public consumption, even if we think we have set up privacy filters.
Thinking about it more, I don't think it bothers me so much that they found the record of the accident- that's fine as I know a lot of police records are pretty public like that. What scares me more is that they were able to get my cell phone number which isn't listed anywhere (that's how they contacted me). The car is in my name (but I listed my home phone number on everything when I bought the car and registered it) and the insurance is in my dad's name and therefore has his cell phone number.
My dad was able to get a very detailed record of the incident for $10. He could have gotten it for free if he went to the police station, but since he's over an hour away it was cheaper to just pay the $10.
At least that should shut the ambulance chasers down, you already have a good lawyer. Amazing they could track you down so quickly. I'll bet they check daily (maybe they even have a bot program) that searches the police records constantly.
We already have a lawyer because of my dad's accident- he's a very good friend of the family (and the head lawyer of the largest auto law firm in Michigan) now since my dad's case went on for about 6 years. My dad is already on top of making sure that the lawyer is involved in everything. But thank you :).
Like I said though- scary that it's public record.
I am also sorry about your accident, romani. That is very scary.
But you know, about the lawyer, maybe you should think about that. I don't know about someone who chased you and tracked you down, but a reputable injury attorney. It sounds like you have a very valid case. You may suffer for years, though you don't have broken bones. And hopefully the woman has decent insurance that will cover it all, that's what it is for. Especially if it is indisputable that she is at fault. I usually don't have much use for lawyers, but I have met some outstanding ones that really do their job to protect you.
Today I was tboned by a woman who ran a red light. She dropped her cell phone on the ground and blew through a red light. I'm in a lot of pain, but luckily nothing is broken. My car is in bad shape though :(.
Anyway, after leaving the hospital and such, I got a phone call from a lawyer who protects "innocent victims". How the heck did he get my info? The same thing happened after my dad's accident and it just baffles me. He knew that the other person was found 100% at fault and offered to protect me and recover any damages or something. It was literally within 8 hours of my accident.
Anyone know? If I remember correctly, at least one person on the P&E forum was a lawyer, but I can't remember who or whether or not that person migrated over here. I'm really irritated by everything right now (the lawyer was what finally set me off completely)- especially given the fact that today was supposed to be my first day at a new job and that was ruined because some idiot dropped her f*ing cell phone. (My new boss was really nice about it though. It probably helped that I was almost in tears when I called her lol)
