he took a job. He got several job offers.  In his desired (??)  field . User Interface/Design

Did he limit himself in 2008-09 in his search? -IMOP, his resume showed stong tendency to physical products and with mechanical listed as his first major, I think many screeners viewed his application as  ME rather than a blend of ME and CS.

........................................................................................................................................

He lives a very active life.  A shared house with chickens (eggs), rabbits (eating), home brew, garden, chores, and a party or a weekender to somewhere .

Is he limiting himself too much (location or position) in the job search? Because he sounds imminently employable, if he was willing to widen his search a bit.

As far as getting oneself positioned for dating....there are so many complete lazy losers out there not positioned for anything but the couch....if I was a kid, I'd just go with the flow at any age, not waiting for the perfect time, but for the perfect person who might come along at any time. You can't wait until everything is just right in life, and then choose a life partner (unless you're doing it from a catalog), they come along where and when you least expect it.

'06 grads got jobs then fairly easily, but now 5 years later, they are ready to move to other companies and challenges. Not as easy today as it was then.

In 2008 and 2009 when DS was on internships, he had a heck of a time in finding a job, and only secured a position when his undergrad prof offered him a position at Udub.  That's with a masters CS.

DS is 26. I think he's targeted  age 30 to get himself positioned before he even looks for a potential dates.

Yipes, if '06 CMU grads are still struggling to find something, either they are way too picky or the job market is still abysmal.

Off topic, but how old is your son? I have a 26yr old niece, local, perfect and wonderful (of course)....that I'd love to set up with someone other than her current boyfriend. Nice guy, but almost 40. Don't think I like that....plenty of divorced guys that I work with, but they are too old for her too.

CC-P Forum, "Son about to graduate, no job yet,' BCEagle91, #371.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/19/business/economy/19grads.html

DS took a new job last week without really trying all that hard (his feeling, but parent's worry);  However, some of his college classmates (06)and HS (02)school mates are still struggling to find something.  The field that DS is currently involved in is User Interface/Use, on cross platforms; It has occurred to me while reading this thread and DS's search for a new position is that a few people could/do/and will  impact the Many. The current example is Facebook, where a few people are able to network everybody else, and for that network, people large and small will pay for that access. Energy specifically Oil, is another example where a few companies, countries, and people can affect everyone else.

The few who are fortunate to have jobs that make software Stuff,  also make a great deal of money. But the masses who use that Stuff, are paid  relatively lower amounts, but use Stuff that cost little. Example is an Apple Iphone app that cost $4 which practically anyone could afford and 10 million people do- Developers make $1million, Apple makes $3million ( I have no idea if the numbers are correct, and I don't have an Iphone).
