poet, he wasn't wearing a seatbelt either. The ironic thing is, last time I saw him face to face was when I took him to McDonald's and yelled at everyone to wear their seatbelts in my car. A seatbelt saved my father's life in an accident and it is something I am compulsive about.
The funeral is Thursday so I'm driving a few people out to that city for the funeral. Then my boyfriend has his opening night for a play he's the lead in on the same day (Thursday). He has never lost a close friend before, so I'm just nervous about how this is all going to go.
*sigh* This is the 6th person I've known who has died since Christmas. And I have another very close friend who is clinging to life. Things have to get easier, right?
the other day I was turning to get on the expressway and an accicent happened right in front of me. The driver of one of the cars went through the windshield. It was really horrifying. My first thought, was "what happend to his seat belt?"
It took me a few minutes to realize he wasn't wearing one. Tragic.
In college, one of my jobs was working for a company that reverse engineered the cause of car accidents. I got to put together the slideshows for the accident investigators and for the legal team. Not pretty pictures.
Since then, I don't speed. And always wear my seatbelt. Driving defensively - not following the car behind you too closely, watching for potential hazards, avoiding large trucks whenever possible. Road hazards that happen instantly - something falling off of a car, something in the road can contribute to accidents.
So many things can cause an accident, but it's usually a combination of things. Speeding makes it much, much harder to get control of your vehicle if there is some dumb**** who is texting on their phone next to you and starts veering out of a lane into yours.
Accidents are accidents. They can happen to us anytime. Minimizing your risks whenever possible is the only solution. Or never drive.
Sorry about your friend, Romani. That just sucks. :(
A lot of his facebook has been locked temporarily, so this is the only picture I could access of him. He is the one on the right (sitting down). Sometimes, it helps to have a human face to tragedies.
I am a terrible speeder. It is a wonder that I have not been ticketed or in an accident because of it.
On Saturday, I lost a friend due only to speeding. He never texted while driving and he didn't have any alcohol or other substances in his system. It was one of my boyfriend's best friends and everyone who graduated from that high school, even up at our university, is just in shock. It is a REALLY tight-knit high school and it was a kid everyone knew and liked.
I know that when my parents warned me about driving it was always "don't drink and drive" and "don't text". Coming from a state where it's normal to go 85 on the freeway, speeding seems like nothing to us. I don't think any of my friends were ever lectured about speeding but it is very dangerous. Just remind your kids, that's all I ask.
