There is not enough info here to truly criticize either side or any party. Something must have happened between the school notification to the parent and later that night where the school was pressing charges.
There's enough info to criticize handcuffing an 11 year old, throwing him in a jail cell and separating him from his parents. Talk about PTSD. Civilized countries don't do that to children. The police didn't have to do that.
I am curious about why the school changed their minds. Was it the "zero tolerance" nonsense, or did more facts come to light after the school spoke to the parents?
The school was aware that the boy was in treatment, determined he was not a threat, notified his parents and sent him back to class. His mother, "Jane" was shocked when Arvada Police showed up at their home later that night...
.According to the police report, "Tim" explained he made the drawing to release anger and would never hurt teachers or anyone. At first school officials did not want to press charges, but changed their mind when police called them later that night. A juvenile assessment report shows he's never been in legal trouble before and is at low risk to reoffend.

What if the police when they went to the home found out that the child had access to a gun? Would you as a teacher feel comfortable teaching a child that did a picture of TEACHER MUST DIE?
I worked in the educational field, and I can tell you NO!
The parents are doing the right thing, the child is in therapy. I am just not sure he is safe to be in a classroom. Their priority is to help, guide and protect their child. The educator's priority is to help, guide, and protect EVERY child in the classroom.
Trust me, I have seen it all. I have taught LD classes, and mainstream classes. I am not arguing he has ADD, I am questioning his anger.
