The leader or air to ground strike is small compared to the return "counter strike".

I do wonder what the roll of ash and sulfurous gases emitted from the volcano is in the observed phenomena. I would think lightning would follow the path of lowest dielectric strength and greatest or most easily ionized material.

Too bad I never had time to take Physics of Atmospheres and Oceans back in the olden times.

Oh well, as we tell the kids and grandkids, you can do anything but you cannot do everything.

Those are beautiful pictures, BigG.  It almost looks as if the lightening were coming out of the volcano, rather than coming from the sky.

Oh yeah, their economy is in the dumper too...

I wonder if ash or other emissions from a volcano offer a preferential path for lightning?
