Thanks for the information, Donna. That looks like pure gold. It's been kind of hard to find the information I'm looking for, I don't think I've gone on the right sites.
I would love to meet you and zoosermom too. We haven't scheduled out the daytime stuff for the Tue-Wed-Thur we are there, I think we'll just go to the musical/plays in the evening. We are staying at the Times Square, which I'm assuming is close. If it works out for you (I can make sure it works out for me), I'd love to meet you.
Yeah, that's what I figured. I'm fine with political diversity, I can take it...but I fear I might have to listen to my husband groaning and complaining. He really ruins it for me sometimes. Maybe the next play/musical we see can be based on the Glenn Beck novel. No, I'm kidding, even he couldn't stand that. Sorry to offend you GB fans.
My son is a Green Day fan, so he picked that musical out instantly. Quite the additional treat to have the lead singer playing it. You guys are so lucky to have that kind of access to entertainment.
Busdriver, this is a link to the New York Times's list of shows currently on Broadway, with further links, in turn, to the Times's reviews of some of them:
http://theater.nytimes.com/venues/broadway.html
(It's the page for "A" through "L," but I can't figure out how to get to the second page of the list!) I notice that the one you already bought tickets for is one of the ones with a gold button denoting a NY Times "critic's pick." Here's a list of all their "critic's picks": http://theater.nytimes.com/shows/critics/critics-picks
And this is the first page of the Off-Broadway list:
Well, so much for listening to recommendations from me (ie you guys and friends)....my son really wants to see American Idiot. Apparently the front man for Green Day is performing the lead role while we're there. Got front row mezzanine seats....hope it isn't a waste of money!
If your son is a Green Day fan it is a chance of a lifetime to see the lead singer playing the lead role. He's really lucky. The name American Idiot comes from the name of one of Green Day's albums. You should listen to it before you see the play. Warning: It's "left leaning"

I'm still rooting for Jersey Boys, Billy Elliott, or Wicked for the other musical(he ruled out Spiderman, apparently there still are ALOT of technical problems).
Unless.....are there any really good plays showing now? I would have loved to see View From a Bridge, but that's long gone.
When we figure out where the shows are going to be, I'll let you know zoosermom! We're going to be staying at Times Square, which apparently close to the theatre district (but I don't know where anything is in New York). The hotel recommendation was from a good friend, so I'm trusting it will work out well.
Thank you all for your advice! I looked into what may be available at the time we're there. And I'm thinking that a musical is probably more worth the money than a play? Wow, those performances are expensive. Does anyone know what tickets are worth buying? Is a cheap seat good enough, or should you spend a little more to get better, or go crazy and get the pricey ones? If it's worth it, we'll do it. We've never seen a show in NYC before.l
We'll probably let our son pick one show, and we'll pick the other. Sounds fair to me! Here is what is available that I can see. It sounds like there are some votes for Jersey Boys, Billy Elliott and Spiderman--as far as those are the ones available and playing. I wonder if Phantom of the Opera and Wicked are also good, anyone seen those? So here's what they have that I think we could like--consider I have a 16 year old who loves this stuff, and if there's too much political correctness I'm going to have to listen to my husband complaining:
On Broadway
The Addams Family American Idiot (I don't know if I like that title) Billy Elliott Chicago Jersey Boys Lion King Momma Mia Memphis Phantom of the Opera Spiderman Wicked
Off Broadway Ave Q Newsical the Musical A Perfect Future (Play)
There seems to be a very positive buzz about Spider Man despite the difficulties it has endured during the run-up to its opening. I don't know when it opens so it may not even be an option when you are there, but it seems worthwhile to at least do some investigating to see if the buzz is correct.

I've definitely heard of all those, will check and see if they're playing. Wonderful and fun is good, I'm not big on depressing plays....though I know some are great. Thanks, I hope we'll have fun and that we won't be stuck in a huge snowstorm!
I don't know what's playing in New York these days, but I've recently seen Jersey Boys, Spamalot, and Billy Elliott (in other cities). All are wonderful and fun. ... Enjoy your time in New York, whatever you end up doing and seeing.
Well, it looks like we're going to visit NYC in mid/late Feb. We're hoping to visit some colleges for our son (so far on the list are Vassar and NYU, maybe Colgate if we can stand to drive that much).
But we'll be able to see a play or two, as long as they perform during the week and maybe go to the Metropolitan museum. I was curious, if you could just see one or two plays, which ones would you pick? I'd hate to go there (with a 16 year old son who loves plays) and just see one mediocre show. Any favorites?
