Within weeks of moving to Kentucky (from California) in 1986 I was hit with my first true winter storm. In the midst of it, I had to drive 60 miles to interview a veterinarian for an article I was working on. (I couldn't re-schedule it because there was a surgery involved.) Well, I naively drove out of our apartment complex thinking, "hey, this ain't so bad." Almost instantly--and fortunately, at low speed--I hit a patch of black ice, spun out, and jumped a curb, a harmless incident that traumatized for life. Over the years, I've become more savvy about driving on bad roads and in inclement weather, but in that regard I'll always be a California girl at heart.

Driving on ice terrifies me.

The last time I did it, I hydroplaned twice in about a two minute period.  Not fun.

Sorry for all my cyber friends who have to live with it for any length of time!

When the dinosaurs roamed, we were near the equator :p.

Anyway, the reason the roads were still slippery is because the salt wasn't doing anything. It was so cold that as soon as you put down salt, it just refroze.

In Michigan also. The cold is tolerable (been here since dinosaurs roamed) and can even stand the snow. BUT what heck.. Can we get some salt on the roads? It snowed Sunday. It's Wednesday and it's still like a hockey rink out there. There is no good reason why I am still still sliding while trying trying to stop at the light, or doing stunt driving while trying to turn a corner.

I don't mind snow or rain, but here in VA we have had horrible wind, and that I hate. With high winds you can never feel warm and that includes wearing 3 layers. Plus, it takes everything including kicking our dogs on their butts to make them go outside to do their business.

Yeah, well, if you live in Costa Rica, I don't think you can whine about anything!

Or so says my husband who would relocate there in a heartbeat.

We all get used to whatever weather we have.  I can't imagine dealing with blizzards or black ice, anymore.  They scare me.  When we would travel to snowy locations for family trips, I would be terrified about the weather conditions and driving.  Most people who live with it just deal with it and don't appreciate how dangerous the conditions can be.

Sorry, folks.

And here we were whining because it was kind of cold today! I only lived in the midwest for one year - one cold, miserable snowy winter, along with one hot, humid, miserable summer.

I don't know how you all do it.

Hang in there.  Stay warm and dry!

My friend down in Costa Rica was complaining because it was cold (it was like 72 instead of the normal mid-80s for this time of year). I sent him a copy of our weather (it felt like it was about -20something at that point) and wanted to tell him to shove it, but I admit I don't know that in Spanish. hmm

I'm actually ok with snow. I would rather have it be 30 and snowy rather than 35 and rainy. That said, warmer is better. I don't really know what normal is anyhow. We've had it warmer this time of year and colder this time of year...

Global warming puts more moisture in the air. More moisture = more snow. We've got plenty of snow!

I just want NORMAL weather lol. Little warmer, less snow. Is that too much to ask?

Little bit of snow, 3-4 inches, just bitterly cold with below zero wind chills. I'm hoping for some global warming here soon... not climate change, just warming. :)

This winter storm is ridiculous.

It took me over two and a half hours yesterday to get back to school. Usually, only an hour drive. Then once I got there, I had to walk a mile from the parking lot to my class (was slightly late) and had to stop half way in the vet building just to get warm and prevent an asthma attack.

On the way, two trucks in front of me on the highway smashed into each other. I wasn't going that fast, but I tried stopping and simply spun and spun. Almost ended up in the ditch, but managed to press the gas just a little to keep from going in. It was the first time I spun out on a high way and I was shaking because I was so scared. The roads are salted, but it's so damn cold that the salt doesn't do anything.

Now, I'm sitting in my house freezing, despite the fact that the heat is on. It's just SO COLD.

My family in Minnesota was sending me pictures during the blizzard. It's unbelievable. It couldn't have held off a week until we were all done with school? hmm

So how about you guys- did you get hit by the blizzard of December 2010? Lol.
