OMG - I think Geeps bound and gagged NBA and is posting in his place. Someone call the mods!

My Prius battery has a 100k/8 yr warranty.  The warranty is 150k/10 yr. in CA.

There is the possibility I grabbed incorrect commodity prices.
http://www.metalprices.com/

But to indulge myself;

Nickel metal costs about $10.00/lb.

A nickel coin weighs 5 grams. There are about 90 of them in a pound.

Copper metal costs  about $3.75/lb

A "nickel" coin is 25% nickel, 75% copper.
http://www.usmint.gov/about_the_mint/?flash=yes&action=coin_specifications

(3.75*0.75)+(10.00*0.25)

2.81+2.5 =  $5.31/lb metal value of "nickels"

90*0.05=$4.50

I seem to recall it is illegal to melt down "legal tender"coins for metal recovery.

A nickel coin is not worth a nickel worth of nickel of metal. It may be worth 5cents but nickel and copper which make up the nickel is worth a lot more than a nickel.
confuse

Use fiat money. evileye

If I remember, our Prius came with a 5 year battery warranty.

Darwin would have said he's filling an unexploited environmental niche.

Typical liberal moron, lol

How can nickel be "expensive"? It's only worth 5 cents! If it's so valuable, why didn't they make the nickel worth $100?

How can global warming exist when it's so cold right now?

And even if it did, it would only raise temperatures by a couple of degrees. Big effing deal. If I turn up the temperature in my house a few degrees, I hardly notice a difference.

Typical liberal moron. Go read Playgirl or some other homo magazine.

Do all the dream bystanders scream at you personally to fix a giant horribly complex machine and fix it now? Oh yeah, the manuals and control labels are in heiroglyphics or Sanskrit or some such.

I get that bleedover from my work.

LOL - it wasn't a runaway. The start button just got sluggish and I hold it down an extra long time for it to shut down.

I do have runaway car dreams but I'm always in reverse when it happens and I can't see.

I've been driving mine for 6 years and have 110k miles on it. I had to replace the little battery a year ago. The symptom for that was pretty weird. It didn't want to turn off.

I hope you're right, Cartera. I don't relish spending thousands more for a battery every 5 years. frustrated.gif

My sister has a Honda hybrid - can't remember which model.  She has had it at least five years and has already had to replace the battery.  I can't remember if she had to pay for it's replacement or it was under warranty.

She had it done at the dealer.  I assume they recycle these properly.

But I do wonder about those batteries ending up in landfills.

"busdriver, serious question for you. I heard that the batteries on the Prius need to be replaced every few years, and currently we can't recycle them so the only place to get rid of them is the local land fills."

My husband says he thinks you replace them every 4-5 years, this article says every 7-8. So, yeah, it doesn't sound too environmentally friendly unless you can rebuild/recycle them. Maybe when we get those approving looks, we can tell people about our toxic and wasteful battery. Actually, with gas as cheap as it is now, it definitely wasn't worth the cost. But when we bought it, gas was $4.50, looking like it was going up. And we do love the car. My husband enjoys monitoring the constant gas mileage useage (he leaves for a couple of days and I totally screw that up)! Having to replace the battery makes it an expensive car, though the maintenance on it is nil so far.

Hummm. Nickel-metal hydride battery recycling, perhaps reconditioning. Maybe I can do something.

Here's a link. No warrenty expressed or implied as to feasibility;
http://www.articlesbase.com/cars-articles/the-toyota-prius-battery-replacement-cost-brand-new-battery-is-expensive-1963376.html

Batteries would  probably have a higher element density than the original ores(a few percent). The problem is collection and processing. Mining and smelting are highly optimized to process megatons of materials.

busdriver, serious question for you. I heard that the batteries on the Prius need to be replaced every few years, and currently we can't recycle them so the only place to get rid of them is the local land fills. From what I've heard, you'll need to replace these multiple batteries at least three times during the life of the vehicle.

Brings up the point I've heard that this makes the Prius not as "environmentally friendly" as many of the people who praise them for that reason are led to believe (LOTS more toxic batteries in our dumps).

Not picking a fight, just trying to see if there is any truth to these rumors.

Funny, my husband can't stand the approving looks he gets from the environmentally super-conscious around our area, when they see the car (obviously our Prius, not the truck). We got it when gas was $4.50/gal, not for the smug superiority of "I'm saving the environment and you're not". We're still looking for that Prius gun rack, or appropriately snide sticker

I own 2 suv's and a mini-van. All purchased used for half of what a Prius would cost. Choke on the smog... I have to pay bills...when I can do that without worry then I'll be concerned about some pseudo man-made issue.

Hey, I've had a great response for the last few years. Look around and say loudly, "Well, I am the only one in this room with a Prius." Shuts em all up! Cause they don't want to buy em, everybody wants their SUV four wheel drive.

You certainly can't question the absolute truth the the earth is rapidly warming, and it's all our (Americans) fault. And for some reason, the solution is a massive money transfer to third world countries. Should you question any little thing about statistics, methods, shutting down any dissent, possible exaggerations....you are an uneducated moron!

It hardly ever varies - bring up the mainline skepticism of the one thing that keeps Al Gore relevant and you'll find youself being lectured as to who believes in evolution and the evils of anti-intellectualism, anti-elititism, and agressive ignorance.

Which is an argument better summed up as: I believe + you don't = you're stupid. Case closed, as is my mind.

It would be fun to dig around as see which political affliations believe that "Organic food" is healthier, that Frankenfood is nutrionally and ecologically evil, that... whatever, but the closest thing to hand was this:
http://pewforum.org/Other-Beliefs-and-Practices/Many-Americans-Mix-Multiple-Faiths.aspx
which suggest that when it comes to open minds, liberals do have them in regards to few things, namely whether they: 1) commune with the dead, 2) see ghosts, and 3) believe in fortune tellers.

The anti-intellectual, anti-elite sentiment in the US is getting very strong. People see Wall Street prosper, as a result of public funding, while they and their families flounder.

So far Rush, Beck and their ilk have deflected populist anger away from the true source of the current economic woes, China's raiding of the US economy for capital and jobs and the "elites" complicity in same.

We are going to see much worse than Sarah Palin and the TEA Party.
Look for a severe right wing backlash against media criticism of her gaffe.

DOOOM!!!

Remember when Republican candidates for the nomination in 2008 were asked to raise their hands if they believed in evolution?

http://www.newsweek.com/blogs/the-gaggle/2010/11/22/meet-the-gop-science-skeptics-likely-to-hold-top-house-science-energy-posts.html#

I never get tired of headlines that make things seem wide-ranging but the facts only pertain to a subset of the subject matter...

The GOP "Science skeptic" is skeptical of Global Warming! That area of science where they have proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that we evil humans are ruining the climate. What would they print if he was skeptical of something that could really be proven? I didn't know Newsweek was the official protector of Global Warming...
